Who does not like sweets?
Both children and adults though very sweet tooth.
Food with a sweet taste can cause a person at risk of obesity if too much is consumed.
According to the American Heart Association, children 2-18 years of age should not consume more than 25 grams of added sugar per day, or six teaspoons (100 kcal).
Launched in MNN (23/08), Monica Griffin, program specialist and dietitian at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta there are some benefits gained from limiting added sugar consumption in children.
1. Develop a taste for healthy food
Children develop a preference appetite when an early age. As is often given high-sugar foods, then they will get used to the sweet taste. So it will be difficult in the future to choose foods that are not sweet. Limiting the intake of sweet foods from an early age, can help develop healthy eating patterns in the small.
2. Improving dental health
Food and sugary drinks can negatively affect dental health of children. Sugar is also touted as ‘food’ bacteria that cause tooth decay.
3. Improve the performance of children
Griffin said that a healthy diet is very important to help the children’s performance. When children often consume sugary foods children often skip healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains.
4. Prevent Obesity
Eating a lot of extra sugar can lead to obesity and overweight will be caused obesity. Sugar has an effect on elevated levels of glycerides, a particular type of fat found in the blood lipids. High triglyceride levels are strongly associated with heart disease. Obesity is also associated with chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep problems. Limiting sugar intake early on can help prevent these diseases.
5. Prevent quickly hungry
Frequent consumption of foods high in sugar can cause stomach rumbling more quickly than foods that have good nutrition. Food malnutrition is usually low in fiber making it easier inflicted hungry.
Griffin also has some tips for parents to facilitate reduce sugar intake of children.
Start slowly, first to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks. If children drink four cups of sugary drinks a day, reducing to three cups each day for a week. And if it is used to give only one cup only.
Additionally give more fruit that is processed in the form of chunks or smoothies. Or serve chocolate pudding with topping of fresh fruits.
